The Angel of the Battlefield
The American Red Cross (ARC) began in 1881 as a result of the hard work of Clara Barton, who had been working with government officials to get an official society started, although her efforts started long before 1881. Ironically, the American Red Cross was beat to the trademark office by the Johnson & Johnson Company in securing the red cross on a white background for their symbol (Gurowitz). This required Barton to make an agreement with the company that would allow the ARC to use the emblem for which it is named. |
